another week, another show in doylestown. we've been having a good streak of shows lately, good lineups and good turnouts with more awesome shit on the horizon for february and march so hopefully things still keep going the way they're going.

anyway tonight's show was a gig i've been looking forward to since i caught best intentions at the moose lodge a month or two ago with tiger's jaw. they definitely stole the show and blew myself and a lot of other people away, they obviously have their high school on lockdown but i took it upon myself to convert some of the older crowd onto the best intentions tip. young ass kids playing catchy pop-punk with the right attitude. i can dig it.

there were a lot of people at this show - 291 paid, a staggered works record. this was probably the first show for a lot of kids, there were many young ass kids in the crowd, and as far as first shows go this was a pretty decent one.

throw me overboard (not to be confused with the similarly named pop-punk band from this general area "man overboard", because i think they are confused a lot) opened the show. it was their second show, i saw the only other one they've played in a barn in holland and was kind of impressed, they seem pretty tight at what they're doing. the vocals could use some work though, not every pop-punk band has to have syrupy-sweet "poppy" vocals but the singer's voice is so gruff (re: he's basically singing for a hardcore band but it just happens to be pop punk) that he seems out of place, like he showed up to the wrong show or something. hey, it's pop punk! you won't look "gay" if you actually sing, try it out. still early on for this band though so they could go either way.

title fight played next, a ton of kids crowded the front of the stage area and were ready to rock out. it's funny and awesome that title fight is regarded so highly in the "normal kid" high school scene around here, it only took us like two and a half years of bringing them to doylestown until they became a "household name". i've seen title fight play amazing sets and lackluster ones (i've probably seen this band like 15 times at this point), and this was a great one. they played old hits and people went nuts, they played new songs and they sounded good. alex russin, brother of ben and ned and among other accomplishments, the only man who played EVERY posi #s and this is hardcore with one band or another, did guest vocals on a song and acted like donkey kong. cool. i tried to dive and found the stage itself at the moose almost literally undiveable (at least for me), so please remind me of this fact before i embarrass myself again. obviously a lot of young, excusably clueless kids were pushmoshing and doing whatever during this set, some dudes who were old enough to know better "got hard" on the dance floor and made fools of themselves - bob meadows made me make an announcement on the mic on this topic before war pigs, the offending parties saw the error of their ways and the problem was solved. for the record though, moshing "hard" to a pop-punk band is silly shit 90% of the time (statement null and void when erection kids used to cover 'among the living'), especially when it involves getting tough with a 10th grader trying to hop up and down and push his friends from science class.

war pigs played next, a better set from them than any i've seen recently. they sounded tight minus some fuck-ups from kokinda's equipment that made it sound like the guitar from guitar hero when you're not playing right for a song or two. after that it was all gravy, i'm not sold on the new record yet but the new songs were sounding good enough for me to give it a second chance. a great cover of "world peace" was thrown in and i moshed with an american flag, 'nuff said. i think that might have actually been on my list of life goals to accomplish before i die. despite being the only hardcore band on the lineup a lot of non-core kids checked them out and they got a great response, i was proud of the crowd for being open-minded enough to check out a band they don't have 3rd period study hall with or something.

balance and composure went next, i was worn out from war pigs so i hung back a little bit. almost the entire show crowded towards the stage and kids were crowd-surfing and shit, it was pretty funny. much singing along and girls having religious experiences while they played, definitely a hype-band amongst the youth of doylestown but unlike the ones that came before they might actually deserve it with original songs and decent musicianship. this was the first time i saw erik play guitar for them and had i realized that sooner i probably would have paid closer attention, but from where i was standing (behind the throngs of people crowded up front) everything sounded pretty good.

best intentions ended up headlining for some reason, i think the lineup for this show was a little wonky but it worked in spite of itself. BI's set was great but i think it would have been better closer to the middle of the show because it seemed like a lot of the show/their fanbase had to leave for bedtime or something by the time they played. still an awesome set, most of the show was crowded up front going nuts, i set off a sum 41 cover with them (fat lip, and oft-covered doylestown favorite - but hey at least i'm from the town next to where sum was from in ontario) and the vibes were definitely great. it's impossible to watch this band without a smile on your face, too fucking fun. they're tenth graders who are good enough to make post-high school pop punk bands look fucking stupid. i hope they stick together, they're not at title fight status of talent at a young age but they're not that far off, either way i'd like to see where they're at by the time high school's over. at any rate they're one of the best assets doylestown has going for it right now, and i back them 100%.

all in all a good show with good vibes, there was some inevitable friction but all in all the crowd of over 300 (when you count bands and other lowlifes who didn't pay) hardcore kids, pop punk kids, kids from around here, kids from far away, normals, and more meshed pretty well given the circumstances. everyone involved in tonight's show deserves a pat on the back, it was one to remember.

MOTHER OF MERCY / MONGOLOIDS SHOW REVIEWED

The show at the Moose Sunday evening was a great one, 150ish kids came out on a night with shitty weather and no insanely-humongous headlining bands (mostly local in fact). The bands played great, there was a good feeling in the air, all in all it was a fun show and one for the books.

FULL CIRCLE opened the gig, their 2nd show with their "revamped" lineup (and the first in an actual venue). They're off to a good start, big improvements were made in the switch from thrash and tony on bass and vocals (respectively) to ott and rycal. i think people assume that if you have tony conner in your band it's gonna be good because bangarang was so successful it made everyone forget about the 40 god-awful bands he did before that. full circle realized their mistake and re-started the band before things went too far. Anyway, a few fuck-ups here and there during the set, most notably during a hacked-to-hell PANIC cover (some Doylestown band covered Panic at the '04 Halloween show, it was ridiculous. forget who it was though), but overall sounding pretty good for a band just starting out. I expect some decent things from this band in the future.

a band from out of town, delaware to be exact, called CUT SHORT played next, and they sounded pretty good. I was completely unaware of this band before watching their set at the show but to my ears it sounded like Integrity-type stuff with some more modern Ceremony-ish stomping mosh parts. Pretty cool, the singer sounded good and they brought some friends out to rep it on the dance floor for them. They brought a good vibe and will be a band I will pay attention to in the future.

next came FORCE FED, perkasie/bluebell's local straight edge heroes. they've been back from their little hiatus for awhile now, and have been gigging out fairly often and it's paid off for them both in their crowd response (massive side-to-side moshing like Doylestown was located somewhere in the mid-west) and how good they sound live. Bues's vocals were the stand-out of a set which included an SSD cover nobody in the crowd really knew (duh) and all the old favorites. if this band keeps doing what they're doing (playing shows, writing good songs, putting it out there every time they play live) they could gain more attention outside of our backyard around here.

the EARLY BIRDS of wilkes-barre played next, their last show in Doylestown and maybe their 2nd to last one EVER? i'm unsure of the reasons behind the early birds breakup but it's a shame because they've finally got a handle on their sound, in just a little over a year they've come a long way. as usual when a wilkes-barre band plays doylestown (and especially for an occasion like this) a ton of wilkes-barre kids were around to represent, and that they did. much moshing and singing along, a few doylestown kids got in on the action too which is always great to see (local kids supporting a band not because they're 'hyped' or because they're close friends, but because they've checked them out objectively and decided they like the tunes). their usual cover of "no spiritual surrender" was a highlight. doylestown has always been good to the early birds, and tonight was no exception.

THE MONGOLOIDS are another out-of-town band that has always received a warm response in Doylestown, tonight they sounded killer and were just all around fun to watch, playing a great mix of songs off their new record "assorted music" that officially released the day before at a show in Edison and all the old hits. Kids moshed, Greg didn't make things TOO awkward like he sometimes does, and it seemed like a real fun set - it seems like the Mongoloids have rejuvenated themselves after this last winter tour they did.

MOTHER OF MERCY headlined to a hometown crowd, got a much-deserved insane response to the hits everyone knows and played some songs off their forthcoming LP that sounded excellent. MOM has risen to the top of the totem pole around here by having a triforce of quality - great musicians, great work ethic (playing out and practicing constantly), and a great live show. Whenever MOM plays now you know kids are gonna go off and it's gonna be a good time. Everyone digs MOM from the straight edge kids to the drunk scumbags to random metalcore kids and other pieces of shit, the diverse fanbase makes for a retarded "anything goes" kind of environment when they play, although all that really lead up to tonight was a couch being dragged into the middle of the pit. luckily MOM is a band that actually deserves whatever recognition they get - it's hard for me to be objective about a band that has some of my best friends in it but when I distance myself from that fact I still see Mother of Mercy as one of the tightest units in hardcore right now, and we're definitely lucky to have them as one of our "local bands". there are tons of major cities in america that would kill to have a band half as good as MOM.

Anyway the show went off without a hitch, kids weren't babies about the snow and came from all over the place, no fights and no bullshit, even that whiner Meadows looked like he had a smile on his face most of the night. Doylestown is a great place to catch a hardcore show in 2009.

So I havent updated this thing since before the Phillies did the big dirty. I figured I will keep this going and not become a lazy piece of shit... Anyway on my break I was considering just turning this into a weather blog but months went by and I said, fuck that, no one is going to read a blog about the weather in PA. So lets get the ball rolling again.

Recently FULL CIRCLE has done a couple of local shows here and there and they finally recorded. Six songs feautring young heart throbs such as Joe Fasano, Scotty B, and Rycal. Download the 6 song demo here.

Back from a winter stint with the Mongoloids, MOTHER OF MERCY is doing two shows this weekend. The first one is on Friday in Edison, NJ with Cold World, War Hungry, Petition, The Mongoloids (Record Release Part I), and a very special guest. here is a flyer, it looks rad:

The other show is this Sunday in Doto with The Mongoloids (Record Release Part II), Force Fed, The Early Birds (last show in Doto), Full Circle, and Cut Short. It's at the Moose Lodge. ALSO, MOM just finished recording a brand new LP with Matt Buckley (he has done Dead Again, War Pigs, On Course, Layin Waste, Burdens, you know...a shit load) all brand new songs probably coming out in early spring on Six Feet Under Records (Let Down, Mongos, Cold World, Bitter End, you know). The record release will probably be off the chain for sure.

BALANCE AND COMPOSURE has gotten rid of Dan Kerrigan on lead guitar and replaced with Erik Petersen (Erection Kids, Mute, War Pigs). Hopefully B&C will be heavier live and not "sound like a bunch of pussies" - Bob Barrella.

WAR PIGS new LP will hopefully be out in March sometime. 9 Brand new songs. If you want a little taste of the new record, there are 2 songs on their myspace, or you could just check them out at the show coming up on January 23rd w/ Balance And Composure, Title Fight, Best Intentions, Eating Glass (hardcore from CANADA), and Throw Me Overboard. Show is at the Moose Lodge.

Perkasie pop punk band ALL IN A YEAR has put up their new 7 song EP up for FREE DOWNLOAD. Check out this "kinda" new pop punk sensation. This EP will hopefully get them that foot in the door and play out a little, more people need to hear this. It's free! Cop it.

DOTO: ok, whats your name. what current bands are you in / what bands were you in and your positions?
JUSTIN: my name's justin m. ogden, i play bass in let down, up until recently i thought that was my only band but wrong answer may or may not still be a band, every time i see them they talk about practicing and shit and then blame the fact that we haven't done anything in a year on each other, so who knows. previous bands? kidnapping lindbergh, lazzaro, fuck this, rip it, and i may or may not have been the original singer of rope burn. hopefully if you're reading this you're not old enough to remember any of that.

DOTO: whats up with let down lately...we know you guys are going on that huge tour with have heart, ceremony, and blacklisted....whats next for Let Down after the tour is over?
JUSTIN: it's kind of hard to say and we haven't really discussed it, at first it seemed like 'we're in this alone' would be the last thing we ever record but recently bob started talking about how he was pissed off enough to write another 7 inch so maybe we'll do that. i doubt we're going to do a normal winter tour like we always do because touring at that time of year usually sucks, everyone does it so places that have shows are having shows every night of the week with like 9 bands on it. don't get me wrong, tour is tour and it's better than home but we only ever really toured then out of necessity. i know that we're going to play this is hardcore next year, whether that's one of our last shows or not remains to be seen. i don't feel like let down is stale or anything and i still have fun with it but it's been a LONG time. we'll keep going until it doesn't make sense to go anymore, but who knows when that will be.

DOTO: Let Down has been around for so long. What has been your favorite local show and favorite non-local show? Don't be afraid of explaining why..
JUSTIN: my favorite local would definitely be the war pigs record release, it was awesome to see so many kids come out for an all-local show (well, all local and wilkes-barre, but we're pretty much one and the same at this point) and then have everyone go nuts. back in what people now describe as "the glory days" or whatever of shows around here we would get turn outs like that but it was just because people in bands were popular in their stupid high school or whatever, 200 kids would come out but all except like 30 would stand in the back because they weren't hardcore kids. that show proved that with a great lineup we can get that many legit kids to come out for a show with all real bands on it. i had more fun at that show at the age of 23 than any local show i'd been to since i started coming out when i was like 15. as for non-local, probably every time we play cleveland and people throw fireworks, the one last winter was pretty fucking crazy. cleveland kids are some of the best on earth.

DOTO: you've been in this situation before....some kid outside a Doylestown show wants a good slice of DOTO pizza...where are your top 5 places to get a piece of pizza around here?
JUSTIN: very very important question. my first choice is always italian delight, you go there, you get a great slice of pizza for not a whole lot of money, they bring the thing out to your table, it's a no-bullshit kind of a place. if you're looking for some fancy shit with all sorts of wild toppings, then i'm about pina's III over by k-mart, they do BBQ chicken and chicken parm pizza right. number three would be franco's over by the 7-11 at 202 and shady retreat, they used to have the cheapest fucking lunch special (2 slices and a drink for 2.99) that kept me going when i was broke as shit and still living in chalfont. number four would be pina's II at bristol and 202 for their sweet all you can eat pizza/pasta nights, and number four would be that weird little shack over by the dairy queen on main st (spatolas), haven't been there in forever but it was good. nat's pretty much sucks, pizza for tourists and retarded teenagers, and if you really want to eat at jule's, fuck you hippy, go back to new hope.

DOTO: you are on a long drive to somewhere and you wanna put an album you wont have to change from start to finish. top 3 long drive albums...go.

DOTO: it seems to be the cool thing in hardcore now to get drunk, smoke weed, yada yada. how do you feel about the current state of straight edge in hardcore?
JUSTIN: oh man it sucks so bad haha. like there are some decent straight edge hardcore bands out there but there's no powerhouse or anything, there's no judge, no floorpunch. most of the decent edge bands are just like, project bands that don't really do anything, which is cool and all but somebody needs to fly the flag, you know? the rest of the straight edge bands seem to downplay how straight edge they are, i mean they'll put it on a shirt or allude to it in their lyrics but i never see full bands Xed up anymore, nobody wants to be in your face about it except for a bunch of 'bring back prohibition' weirdos from the desert. i dunno i think it's pretty beat, it's obvious that a lot of people in bands actually have some concept about how their actions will determine how succesful they are in 'the hardcore scene' and that's so wack, it's not popular to be straight edge right now so nobody wants to be 'that guy' and put themselves out there as being straight edge and face the judgment of the crowd. in light of all of that, for the last 4.5 years let down has pretty much Xed up for every show, all of us, and we never downplayed straight edge. if you look at the lyrics to 'we're in this alone' it's more about straight edge than it ever was before. we play places where people will very likely be hostile towards that because it goes against what they're about and we don't not X up/downplay what we're about to try to make new friends and sell a bunch of t-shirts. this pisses people off because it's strange to them to see a band actually doing the things they talk about in their lyrics. oh well, fuck them all.

DOTO: any last words, shout outs, shit talking that might make it on the headlines of other blogs?
JUSTIN: my last words are, if the things you read about let down on the internet piss you off and make you not want to like our band, then chances are you never read our lyrics anyway or had any concept of what we were about as a band so whatever, good riddance. shout out to everyone who follows the herd mentality in hardcore and is so afraid of a faceless bunch of retards judging them that they'll hide their real opinions in order to be accepted. shout out to doylestown hardcore now and forever, war pigs, mother of mercy, lil matt, babi dani, bob meadows, perkasie kids, the montgomery county scragglers, wilkes-barre kids, all the straight edge kids, all the drunk scumbag assholes, everyone who makes the scene here what it is, for better or for worse i couldn't think of a better place to live and go to shows, and i've been all over the goddamn place. shout out to toronto kids, cleveland kids, birmingham alabama kids, lubbock texas kids, omaha nebraska, the 15 cool people we met in europe, my cat, my roommates, carousel flowers, cyborg one comics, kevin the dude i vaccuum the country club with every night, kyle kimball - still fart noises for life, joe hanlon and the llocal troll crew, allie v, someday i'll take you to a decent place for dinner, everyone who posts on doto.activeboard.com. check out LD on the fall tour, check out the other bands on that tour they'll all great, check out that new cold world record. in case you haven't opened a newspaper lately, it's the end of the world, see you all in hell. WANT YOUR BAND TO BE HEARD ACROSS THE COUNTRY? JUSTIN IS WILLING TO DO THAT.

"so i had this idea today: before i leave for the big tour let down's doing in the fall (us, have heart, ceremony and blacklisted, full USA) i wanted to use it in a way that would somehow benefit our area's hardcore scene as well. so i came up with the idea to make a compilation of sorts of doylestown area hardcore bands that i could hand out for free on tour.

if i can get this together i plan to get a song or two from all of the relevant bands in this area, burn them onto a CD with an insert that my roommate will illustrate (he did the one page funnies, the not normal logo, the let down 'europe can suck' it, etc) and then have them for free on our merch table, give them to people who buy our ****, and hand them to my friends who live in other areas. literally any band in the area (any by this area i mean like, all around doylestown, even like wilkes-barre bands and delco area bands if they wanted to be are welcome. no jersey though) who plays hardcore, punk, or hardcore/punk will be welcome to be on the comp. if you're down i'm not going to tell anyone they're not good enough to be on it, i want this comp to be in the spirit of the new breed tape comp of NYHC back in the day. obviously every band on that thing wasn't absolution or anything but just because you're not a "first-tier" local headliner or some **** doesn't mean you don't deserve to get your **** out there and be heard.

ok, if you're down all you need to do is:

1) sendspace a song or two that you want to be on it. i don't care if they're previously released, rough mixes, exclusive tracks, whatever whatever. that's all on you - if i were you i would put my best foot forward though because 9/10 times this would be the first time most of the people who will be hearing this will be hearing you.

2) supply me with $5. this isn't a money-making scheme, CDRs/sleeves/copies all cost money and i don't think $5 per band is exactly going to break the bank. if i get this together i plan to supply each band with several copies of the thing too, it will be a cool little item and to drive home the point that i'm not just trying to gip $5 off you, if you can supply CDRs or CD sleeves you have laying around i will gladly take that instead of the five. the money is negotiable because at the end of the day i'd rather have your band on it than not on it but it would help me alot if you could pony up the money so i can really make this happen. every cent i get will go directly into making more copies of this thing, and i know i can get every copy of this CD i produce into the hands of someone who will listen to it, so the more of you who aren't jews about a lousy five bucks, the better.

anyway since i leave on october 20th i'm giving myself a decent amount of time to get this together so if you're interested get at me here or on AIM or whatever so i can start making a list of who's going to be on it and whatnot. like i said, punk/hardcore bands only, all the indie/whatever bands of the area seem to do a great job promoting the **** out of themselves on their own time, and if they need any more they can just pay to get an add on MTV2 like that ****ty band ruse of fools did back a few years ago.

INTERVIEW WITH GREG FROM CONCRETE JUNGLE

I sat down with Greg over a nice brunch in my father's study to conduct this interview and asked the singer of Concrete Jungle what was beyond the jungle. Tune in...

DTHC: You wanna do this interivew now?
Greg: i'd rather be smoking a bowl...was that the first question?

DTHC: Go smoke one
Greg: brb
Greg: ay dog

DTHC: Ok, first, who are you? What band are you in? How long have you been attending shows?
Greg: Greg Marchand, i'm in concrete jungle, i've been going to shows since allie cislak gave me a the rock paper scissors e.p by mute, so 7th grade.

DTHC: You are in Concrete Jungle. You guys just started and you are a fairly new, young band. What do you hope to bring to the plate with CJ?
Greg: what we wanted to do with concrete jungle is just bring something fresh. Doylestown is constantly shifting music styles. Metalcore, pop punk, "old school" hardcore, all phases this towns seen in one way or another. We've started at a point where creativity and uniqueness are running high and people aren't so worried about breaking the norm, i guess what i'm trying to say is, we just want to sound like something new, a little heavy, a little blazed, real pissed. we also want to bring the jungle sound to d-town, something funky.

DTHC: You just recorded new songs and they are tight as hell. The lyrics are straight forward and straight up raw...where do you find inspiration to write?
Greg: thank you, a lot of the lyrics i write are just things that i wish i could have just said to someones face but didn't get the chance or just didn't. Also being around really retarded people or idiot girls i just think to myself like whats the best way to describe these people, why are they pissing me off so much. So i guess my inspiration are dumb sluts and drunk assholes.

DTHC: What other up and coming bands besides the Jungle should we look out for this fall / winter?
Greg: i think suburban scum are looking to be pretty good, always been a fan of stay sharp look out for whatever they do, and do listein to weekend nachos. and layin' waste.

DTHC: Give me your opinion on the state of the Doylestown scene.
Greg: the scene is pretty good, i mean were all close, were all friends, it'd be nicer to see kids that aren't always around come to shows more often. I just wish that there were more basement shows and the wacky shit that used to happen at depression shows, i don't know.

DTHC: Rank the 5 best places to get a burrito.
Greg: 1. burrito night at the marchands 2. chipotle 3. el taco 4. baja fresh 5. anywhere but california tortilla
